It is exciting to have a new kitten or puppy in your home! The adorable new member of the family will be sure sure to brighten everyone's days.
However, with a young pet comes some serious health care business to attend to throughout your new pet's first year.
Your vet at Afford-A-Vet Animal Clinic will tailor a custom health care plan to your pet's need during their first year. They will be sure to provide you with helpful guidance and support as well!
Your Pet’s First Appointment
Ideally, puppies should their first veterinary visit at around six weeks old. Kittens should have theirs at around eight weeks old.
During your first appointment, your vet will look for signs of congenital issues, search for external parasites, and asses your new pet's overall health with a physical examination.
Your Afford-A-Vet Animal Clinic vet will administer deworming medicine for hookworms and roundworms, and your puppy or kitten's first round of vaccinations.
Lastly, we will perform a blood test on kittens to check for feline immunodeficiency virus and feline leukemia.
Kittens and puppies should attend 3 to 4 veterinary visits between 6 and 16 weeks of age. These appointments allow us to evaluate your new companion's general health and to administer vaccines on schedule.
